REVIEW: What’s Done Cannot Be Undine: Rusalka at Academy of Vocal Arts (for Parterre Box)

Academy of Vocal Arts’ Rusalka—surprisingly, only their second venture in many years into the Slavic repertoire—left a divided impression. As an opportunity to hear promising young artists, always the key mission at AVA, it made its mark with several distinguished performances. As a production of a wonderful but difficult opera, it was a misfire.

Let’s start with the positives—especially, two really terrific assumptions: Alice Chung as Jezibaba and John Matthew Myers as the Prince. Still in her first year at AVA, Chung has already been noteworthy as the Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica; here, she made an even stronger impression…
